Optimized Wilbers WESA suspension for maximum comfort and perfect handling
There have been a number of changes to the suspension compared to the previous model: The familiar ESA system has been replaced by the modern DSA (Dynamic Suspension Adjustment) system. This not only enables dynamic damping adjustment, but also automatically adjusts the spring rate to the current load condition.
The system works with two different spring rates, which are intelligently activated depending on the load. Adaptive vehicle height control can be ordered as an option: when driving slowly, the vehicle automatically lowers by 30 mm, resulting in a still impressive seat height of 872 mm when stationary.
It was already noticeable during the first test drives: The factory damper tuning no longer has much in common with the familiar comfort of the previous GS. Bumps and potholes are noticeably transmitted to the driver – comfort has clearly fallen by the wayside.
There were two clear objectives:
  • To bring noticeably more comfort to the suspension
  • To achieve additional lowering of 20 or 50 mm
Our test bench measurements showed that high friction values and overly stiff compression damping in the low-speed range were responsible for the uncomfortable ride.
Our solution: We installed our specially developed piston with a friction-reducing piston band and a sensitive damping setup tuned for comfort. Together with an optimized spring rate, this restored what makes a GS a GS: the typical comfortable GS driving experience.
The additional lowering of 20 or 50 mm also works without any problems, with or without the optionally available vehicle height adjustment – and without compromising on driving comfort. The standard adjustment range of the ZF OCV valve also offers maximum flexibility.
